Why would Starfleet roll out a starship cobbled from several classes in 2409? We saw in Star Trek: Deep Space 9 that Starfleet sometimes combines certain starship elements when pressed. Once I settled on the design, I thought about giving it a backstory, if only for my own head canon reasons. In other words, I pretty stumbled on the look of the Tempest, but now I can’t imagine the ship looking like anything else. I came across a combination that still kept the basic aesthetic of the Akira-class but had a rugged appearance more suited to a warship. Although I hadn’t planned on using a design other than the standard Akira-class, I played around with the feature just for kicks. Now, STO allows you to customize the look of most ships by mixing and matching components from certain classes. The Akira-class was always one of my favorite designs from the moment I saw one deliver its torpedo barrage onscreen in Star Trek: First Contact. LLAP Star Trek Online STO Midnight Iconians star trek star trek TOS star trek deep space nineįrom the moment when I began playing Star Trek Online, I knew that my endgame ship would be an Akira-class starship. For that reason, I’ll most likely always consider STO the true continuation of the Star Trek universe I know and love. In my mind, it’s content like “Midnight” that make this purportedly non-canon MMORPG a much better representation of Star Trek’s ideals than the latest reboot movies. I was very impressed that STO’s conclusion to the Iconian arc harkened back to those roots. Star Trek is about the pursuit of knowledge and changing preconceived notions based on what you learn, thus expanding your horizons in more ways than one. Star Trek is about putting aside fear, prejudice, and even hatred to explore unknown worlds and to ultimately understand other cultures, even antagonistic ones. To me, Star Trek at its best isn’t about space battles or phaser fights (although I love a good shoot-em-up as much as the next guy). (More recently, Odo’s decision to cure the Female Founder in “ What You Leave Behind” could also be considered in a similar vein.) In those instances, “one act of compassion does more than all of Starfleet’s phasers ever could.” That theme is classic Star Trek. The resolution of the mission drew some parallels to classic Trek, namely the episode “ Arena.” The decision your character makes at the end is very much in line with Kirk’s decision to spare the Gorn captain, despite everything the Gorn had done up until that point. !!! Minor Spoilers ahead for anyone who hasn’t played the episode yet. Canon or not, the latest Star Trek Online episode “Midnight” is a worthy addition to the Star Trek mythos.
